Bitou Cape: an easy northeast-coast trail with huge ocean mood

A mountainous headland on Taiwan’s northeast coast nicknamed the ‘Taiwanese Great Wall’—dramatic sea-eroded landforms, a clifftop lighthouse, and big ocean views about 50 km east of Taipei. The clifftop and lighthouse section has been closed for landslide safety, so it's worth a quick check before you go.

Highlights亮點

  • Dramatic sea-eroded landforms and a clifftop lighthouse, nicknamed the ‘Taiwanese Great Wall’
  • A ~3.5 km one-way coastal trail (~2–3 hour round trip)
  • A former Marine Corps base now reborn as a clifftop coffee shop

Why go

Taipei is dense and vertical. Bitou Cape is the opposite: horizontal ocean views, wind, and a feeling of open space. It’s a mountainous headland on Taiwan’s northeast coast in Ruifang District, about 50 km east of central Taipei, with dramatic sea-eroded landforms and a lighthouse at the tip—earning it the nickname the ‘Taiwanese Great Wall.’

The trail runs roughly 3.5 km one-way, a 2–3 hour round trip, and a former Marine Corps base here (the ‘Wave Crashing Camp’) is now a coffee shop. If you’re already doing north-coast or Ruifang-area destinations, adding this coastal walk makes the day feel complete.

A note on trail status

One thing worth knowing before the trip: while the outdoor coastal trail is normally open 24 hours year-round, the clifftop/lighthouse trail and the lighthouse have been closed for rockfall and landslide safety.

Sections here have closed for landslide risk before, so it's worth a quick check on whether the upper trail has reopened, and it's wise to have a backup north-coast plan ready just in case.

  • Coastal trail normally open 24h; the lower walk is the reliable part
  • Clifftop/lighthouse trail and lighthouse closed for landslide safety
  • Worth a quick check on reopening, with a backup north-coast plan in hand

Getting there

Most routes start with the TRA to Ruifang Station. From there, take Keelung Bus 791 or 886, or the Tourist Shuttle 856 (‘Golden Fulong’).

Alternatively, New Taipei Bus F805 runs to Bitou Fishery Port, a useful access point on the cape’s coastline.

How to plan it comfortably

Dress for wind and sun. There’s little shade on the cape, so bring sun protection and water, and avoid the midday heat—late afternoon is ideal for sunset light, and clear days give the best views. Budget 2–3 hours for the full trail.

Coastal days feel better when you don’t rush. Walk, pause, then walk again, and plan your food stop after, not before, so you can enjoy the trail unhurried (Keelung is perfect for this).

  • Bring sun protection and water—there’s little shade
  • Wear shoes with grip (coastal paths can be slick after rain)
  • Pair with one food stop (Keelung is perfect for this)

FAQ 常見問題

Quick answers to common planning questions.

What’s nearby to combine it with?
It sits on the dramatic northeast coast, so it pairs well with the nearby fishing village of Bitou and a wider coastal day taking in Jiufen, the Gold Museum at Jinguashi, or the sculpted rocks of Yehliu further along. Going by car or the coastal tourist shuttle makes linking these stops easiest.
Is Bitou Cape open right now?
The outdoor coastal trail is normally open 24 hours year-round, but the clifftop/lighthouse trail and the lighthouse have been closed for rockfall and landslide safety. It's worth a quick check on whether they've reopened before you set out.
How do I get to Bitou Cape?
Take the TRA to Ruifang Station, then Keelung Bus 791 or 886, or the Tourist Shuttle 856 (‘Golden Fulong’). You can also take New Taipei Bus F805 to Bitou Fishery Port.
How long is the trail?
The trail is roughly 3.5 km one-way—about a 2–3 hour round trip. It’s a headland with dramatic sea-eroded landforms, nicknamed the ‘Taiwanese Great Wall.’
What’s the best time to visit?
Late afternoon for sunset, on a clear day for the views. Avoid the midday heat, since there’s little shade—bring sun protection and water.
Is there anywhere to rest or get a coffee?
Yes—a former Marine Corps base on the cape (the ‘Wave Crashing Camp’) is now a coffee shop, a scenic place to pause if it’s open during your visit.
